Vantiq Deployment Options

As Vantiq is increasingly becoming the go-to platform for event-driven, generative AI inclusive application development, new customers find themselves facing a quandary:  How should they install the development platform?

NOTE:  This blog post covers development platforms; that is, Vantiq installations meant for application development.  Production applications run on separate installations, aka deployment platforms.

Vantiq supports three types of deployments:

  • Vantiq Cloud
  • Private Cloud (in two flavors!)

NOTE: Vantiq Edge installations are non-clustered Vantiq servers designed to run in edge environments. While it is not a requirement, Vantiq Edge installations usually communicate with a clustered Vantiq cloud installation. Vantiq Edge installations provide all Vantiq core services, but do not include the following:

  • Vantiq’s monitoring services (Grafana)
  • Integration with an OAuth provider
  • Clustered deployment

Let’s look more closely at the Cloud options, then.

Option 1: It’s Already Here: The Vantiq “Public” Cloud

Vantiq maintains an industrial-capacity multi-tenanted development and commercial cloud installations for customers who want to get started on Vantiq right away.  This is:

  • dev.vantiq.com (aka dev)

Additionally, customers can deploy their completed applications to Vantiq’s cloud-based production installation:

  • api.vantiq.com (aka prod)

With this configuration, Vantiq personnel handle everything:

  • Infrastructure management, monitoring, and security
  • Vantiq installation, updates, and monitoring

As a fully-federated system, your company’s Org(s) will not see or be seen by other Orgs in the system, nor will Orgs be able to hog the system resources of the other Orgs.

Vantiq’s dev installation includes on-platform training materials that introduce IDE features.  For example, the first time a new user chooses to add a new Design Model, a short intro tour offering pops up:

There is also an on-demand set of articles, mini-videos and engagements available from the Knowledge Center, recognizable as a “Vantiq Q” icon that floats in the IDE:

The Vantiq “public” cloud-based installations are a good choice for many companies who need trouble-free reliable and scalable infrastructure for their projects and/or deployments.

Option 2: It’s Yours, But It’s Not Your Problem: The Vantiq-Managed Private Cloud

Can you have your cake and eat it too?  Well, having your own private cloud Vantiq installation means you can keep all the system resources for yourself. And having Vantiq create the installation and perform maintenance and upgrade work means that your focus can still be on developing commercial applications, rather than administering the system. At your behest, Vantiq can even make the Knowledge Center and guide engagements available in your IDEs.

Option 3: It’s On You:  The Customer-Managed Private Cloud

For those companies (and government entities) with the infrastructure and other expertise to install and maintain Vantiq– more power to you!  Vantiq maintains a GitHub repository of all the tools needed to provision and install the server and related software, along with instructions and examples.  Your company enjoys full access to that repo upon receiving the Vantiq license.

Cloud-based production-level installations have a lot of moving parts, and Vantiq’s is no exception.  You’ll need proficiency in provisioning the required infrastructure, as well as knowledge of tools like Git, Kubernetes, Gradle, and Helm.

And if any of these moving parts start misbehaving, you’ll have to diagnose the problem and call Tech Support for that problem area yourself.

Still, there are entities that opt for this type of Vantiq deployment; generally, where secrecy is so critical, not even resource usage data should be visible to Vantiq operations personnel.

For customers who choose this option but need help with some aspects of the above, Vantiq’s professional services are available to provide this expertise.

Conclusion: It’s Vantiq, Your Way

This is just the most basic overview of the options available for your Vantiq deployment.  Talk to your sales representative about all the advantages and disadvantages, the trade-offs and costs before you make a deployment decision that works for your needs.
